The Past…the Biggest Barrier to the Future

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God,
which is why we call it the present.

The past is gone. It is great to reminisce about our glory days. To take a whimsical look back and remember with a certain whiff of nostalgia. In reality, those days of yesteryear may not have been as quite as glorious as we remember. It seems as if our human nature requires us to look back at the past with a sense of longing. Sadly, many of us would like to stay in the memories of the past rather than living in the present and grasping onto the future.

Thinking about why we act in such a manner, I realized four reasons many people will hold onto their past so tightly.

These are just a few of the reasons we might look back whimsically at our past. However, what of we begin to realize that God has delivered us from that past for a more glorious future. God delivered us from our past, so that we might depend on Him in the present. Just as the Israelites cried out, wanting to go back to bondage and oppression, we do the same thing. Instead, our cry should be for God to deliver us into the wondrous future He has planned for us. In order to make that move of faith, we must let go of our past and let it live where it needs to be, behind us.

Numbers 14:1–4(NKJV)
1 So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why has the Lordbrought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” 4 So they said to one another, “Let us select a leader and return to Egypt.”
